Women’s wide width shoes used to be impossible to find. You’d walk into a department store, see a stunning pair of beautiful strappy sandals and be totally unable to squeeze your feet into them. It’s frustrating and annoying.
But, there’s good news – women with double wide shoe sizes now have options. More and more high-end shoe manufacturers are making women’s wide width shoes and more specialty retailers are carrying them. Gone are the days when mainstream outlets only sold sizes 6 to 10 medium.
The Ever-Growing American Foot
The average shoe size in America has almost doubled in size in the last 100 years. At the turn of the twentieth century, the average male shoe size hovered between 6- 1/2 and 7. The site goes up to size 16 and to a width of WWW. They also carry narrow fits like AAAA shoe widths. It’s rare that a women with a size 14 WW foot could find a cute strappy sandal, but it happens here every day.
Other sites like ShoeBuy and Zappos also carry a range of wide and double or triple-wide women’s shoes.
Measuring Your Feet
Before you start buying women’s wide width shoes online, make sure you know your actual foot size. Start by tracing the outline of your feet, wearing socks and standing on a piece of paper.
Measure the distance from the tip of your longest toe down to your heel and then the widest part of your foot (the ball). This will give you an accurate size for online shoe-shopping.
